Recent approaches to managing musculoskeletal injuries favour movement control techniques over traditional resistance-based strengthening exercises.
Movement control focuses on maintaining the joint axis in anatomical position while training movements. We have two groups of muscles across the joints: one acts as a stabiliser and the other acts as a mobiliser. They have different functions, similar to the 1st and 4th gears in a motor car.
Adherence to prescribed physiotherapy exercises based on movement control principles is vital for successful rehabilitation.
